Second Macedonia Baptist Church would like to introduce the latest member to our Ministerial StaffBrother Julian Shanks Jr. was born on January 31, 1964 in Cincinnati, Ohio. When he was 5 years old, he moved to Philadelphia Pennsylvania with his family where he lives today. Upon arriving in Philadelphia, Julian and his family joined the New Psalmist Baptist Church. Under the Leadership of the late Pastor Charles Walker Jr., Julian was baptized at the age of 9 and began using the gift God gave him, his singing voice. At the age of 15, Julian became the youngest member to ever sing with the New Psalmist Male Chorus, where under the leadership of the late Deacon Roland Dicks, he learned to sing those old southern hymns that he still sings today.

Julian was educated in the Philadelphia public school system and graduated from Central High School in 1981. After completing his education, Julian enlisted in the United States Marine Corps where he served until 1989. In 1991, Julian married his wife of 22 years, Deaconess Cynthia Shanks, and they have a son and a daughter, Julian III and Ariel. Julian has worked most of his life as a Communication Technician and is certified in Cable, Satellite, and Telephone communications, and is trained in the installation of network infrastructures. For the past 5 years, Julian has been employed by CSL Services as a Manager of Field Services.
In 1999, Julian and his family moved and joined the Second Macedonia Baptist Church. Under the leadership of the Late Pastor Thomas J. Ritter, Julian was ordained as a Deacon in 2002. He has been active in many ministries, including the Sheepfold, Hospitality, Van, Sound and Youth Ministries. He has been a teacher of Children's Church for the past 8 years. During Julian's time at Second Macedonia, he has sung with the Choral Ensemble, the Male Chorus, and the Senior Choir. When it comes to singing, Julian's first love will always be the group that he and Deacon Love started 10 years ago, The Generation of Praise. In 2011, Julian enrolled in the Eastern Theological Seminary where he is currently studying for his diploma in Theological Studies and Leadership.
Under the Leadership of Pastor Harold R. Jolley, Julian has been encouraged to answer the call on his life. Through the preaching, teaching, and fellowship of his friend and Pastor, Julian has been energized to praise God through service and the studying of God's word. Julian's favorite Scripture is Psalm 34:1, “I will bless the Lord at all times: His praise shall continually be in my mouth.” The Scriptures that Julian lives by is "Philippians 2:1-11."
On Sunday, January 12, 2014, Brother Julian Shanks delivered his initial sermon to the congregation. By church vote, approval was give for Brother Shanks to serve in ministry.
